DG Roger-
Final Word
I thank all of you for the good you have each done through this year.

Georgie and I have seen a lot of variety and diversity across our 52 clubs and 8 countries, and we have been impressed by the common thread that Rotary brings out our Best Selves where ever we go.

Thank you for taking on the responsibilities of leadership. Thank you for the time you have put in to helping others, and for developing your Club.
Your enthusiasm and enjoyment of each other’s company is the glue that keeps us working together. Thank you for your ideas and persistence in seeing things completed.
For all your donations to Rotary - thank you on behalf of all those who will benefit.

I wish to acknowledge the great work put in by all the many Rotarians who serve on District Committees. This is where our programmes are developed and managed. From the International Youth exchange, to Global grants that make so many people’s lives better, to our necessary training, to managing our finances, fund raising, and working with others around our Rotary world.

Together we do more -  was a theme I encouraged- and the multi club District Grant allowed bigger projects, such as the big shipment of Wheel chairs to Rarotonga. There was increased cooperation among Clubs in Clusters and geographically.
More Projectsare necessary to engage Rotarians, and provide more Humanitarian Service. The District initiated AED project has been a great success with take up from most clubs. The Diabetes Project still underway has drawn support from many clubs. Our District ERK packing project continues to be popular.
Our District Projects Video provides 22 minutes of project examples and stories across our District, helping to seed new ideas and inspiration. Sharing the experiences that we had in our club visits

Our Island Clubs face the greatest needs in their communities and need the support of our NZ clubs. Their challenges include floods, disease, lack of clean water, education, medical support, housing and much more. I salute those clubs who have reached out to help them, and challenge other clubs in our immediate Rotary family to join in and help them.

We all need to tell our personal Rotary stories to others. This will engage others to join us.

Our Best wishes to you all as you get ready for the new Rotary year.

  Roger & Georgie

Rotary Month - Fellowship

The last month of the Rotary Year and what more appropriate as a monthly theme, as we look back on 2016-2017 and forward to 2017 - 2018:  Fellowship, friendship, the glue that holds Rotary together.  However, Rotary Fellowship goes much wider than just meeting those in your Club on a convivial basis....

$1.2 Billion pledged to end polio
At the Rotary Convention in Atlanta we were advised that it would cost $1.2 billion to continue giving polio vaccines for the 3 years after the last case  -which is required to be able to declare Polio Eradicated.
At Convention is was announced that Rotary would contribute $50 million a year for 3 years. Then Bill Gates committed $300 million in matching Rotary. Canada pledged $100 million, Pakistan $70 million, then Country by Country additional pledges were made - to bring a total of $1.2 million - to see the end of Polio.
It was very impressive to have Rotary organise such a huge commitment from so many.
Add thousands who know about your club ...
The Facebook Campaign to grow public curiosity and awareness in Rotary and from that hopefully some new member’s inquiries continues to be fantastic.  What is lacking is participation from enough clubs.  Those clubs who are sharing the posts from the Rotary New Zealand Facebook page at www.facebook.com/rotarynewzealand are reporting massive increases in interest.

In the week ending 11 June:
  • Total reach for the week = 17,100
  • People engaging with the posts = 1,100

This is impressive.  So, why not take part starting now?  Go to http://www.rotaryoceania.zone/Page/2017-facebook-publicity-campaign-for-all-clubs  for the ‘how to take part’
World politics from students' perspective at MUNA
In what seems a testing time in global history, MUNA (Model United Nations Assembly) once again welcomed vigorous debate focused on the most pressing issues of our day. Organised by Rotary Auckland East with Auckland Girls Gramar School, this event saw high school students sacrificing personal viewpoints and instead adopting those of their delegated country, with alliances comprised and looks exchanged in only minutes of an early start on Friday. Delegates represented their countries not only through speech but through costume; in a crowd of abundant colour, one could spot an Abba inspired Sweden, latex and all, and even a human size Kiwi amongst his Lord of the Rings companions.
