Earlier this month, the Rotary Club of Somerville held their changeover ceremony for in East Auckland. Nestled in the heart of the community, this small but spirited club is a powerhouse of energy and dedication. With only just 10 members, every individual plays a vital role—there are no "passengers" here. Their primary fundraising activity is a unique one: they sell parking spaces at the main entrance to Mount Smart Stadium, the home of the Warriors.
Rain or shine, these committed members work tirelessly to secure funds for their many initiatives. Their track record of success speaks volumes about their perseverance and dedication. The funds they raise have supported an astonishing array of causes. Beyond their contributions to the Rotary Foundation and Polio Plus, they've championed initiatives such as ERK Boxes, SciTech, RYLA, RYDA, MUNA, and have even nurtured an Interact club at Elim College.
Their commitment to global efforts is also evident in their participation in a Global Grant over several years. One of their heartfelt focuses is on "mothers and children." They’ve made significant contributions to birthing units across South Auckland, donating merino wraps and hand-knitted baby caps to new mothers in need. Additionally, they are regular contributors to Women’s Refuge, providing essential items for infants and women.
Education is another cornerstone of their efforts. For years, the club has partnered with two local primary schools to deliver food and Christmas hampers to families in need. They've also generously donated Duffy reading books and first dictionaries to young learners, fostering a love for reading and learning.
As the club transitions to new leadership, IPP Vinod Sareen and President Steven Naudé are set on expanding both the club’s membership and the breadth of their support. They aim to broaden their impact and strengthen collaborations with neighboring clubs, enhancing the experience for all involved.
