DG Allan On The Rotary Foundation.
The Foundation is our members charity of choice, and by members donating, we within the district are able to provide funding both locally and internationally.  Our District is a high recipient of foundation grants that allow us to support our Pacifica members in their endeavours to build sustainable lives within their communities.

Our mission is that we provide service to others, promote integrity and advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through our fellowship of business, professional, and community leaders.

Together, we see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change – across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves.

This Foundation month, we want to say a special thanks to Rotary clubs whose entire membership donated to our Foundation’s Annual Fund last Rotary year.

As we celebrate Rotary Foundation Month, we are congratulating all of the Rotary clubs that had every member generously give at least US$100 to our Annual Fund. Just 7% of Rotary clubs earned this achievement! We are sending a special thank you to both past and current club presidents who lead their clubs to earn this achievement. We are happy to inform you that one or more clubs in your district have received a thank you message for their support!

Thank you for an amazing year. In 2021-22, our Foundation funded more than 1,190 global grants, 470 district grants, and 225 disaster response grants to help communities thrive.

We’re grateful to everyone in District 9920 for supporting our Annual Fund, which enables Rotary members to keep making a difference by improving people’s health, supporting high-quality education, protecting the environment, and alleviating poverty.

Thank you for supporting the Foundation generously so that, together, we can continue Doing Good in the World.  Please also read the next article and report on District TRF activity.
The Enormous Impact Of The Rotary Foundation In Our District
The impact of the Rotary Foundation in the contribution that we make directly through our club projects, via applications for District, and sometimes Global Grants and more, is enormous.  But that is only a start when we think of the impact of the contributions our members and clubs make towards all the Rotary Foundation does, such as the often unseen and underestimated impact of Polio Eradication and its associated health and well-being programmes.  Have a read of the Report from Steve Chaney, Chair of the District 9920 Rotary Foundation Committee and you are guaranteed to be impressed.  Thank you for your support and participation of The Rotary Foundation.

Breaking News:  At the recent Rotary Zone 8 Regional Conference in Canberra, on behalf of District 9920, Jennie Herring collected the Conference Award for NZ District that contributed the most to TRF.

Inaugural Breaking Barriers Disability Day A Huge Success
Ainie Kwok created and led the first "Breaking Barriers" Disability Day as a new District 9920 Youth programme, and what an amazing day that was.  Here you can see some of the participants flying their self-made kites.  Each disabled person was matched with a Rotaractor or a RYLA alumni and they all had a wonderful experience.  St Johns Rotary assisted in a number of ways.  The full story written by Ainie is below.  A picture tells a thousand words so click on the picture for a carousel of pictures.
District Salvation Army Food Packing - Ongoing Support For The Most Needy
As  many people, including families, struggle to put food on the table, one of Auckland's largest foodbanks, the Salvation Army, has had the ongoing support from several Rotary clubs for some years now in packing food parcels.

The Rotarians, and supporters, come as they can for as long as they can, but quickly find that what they are doing is quite an enjoyable chance to chat with others ... that very important fellowship aspect of Rotary!  Read the story and think about joining in on a packing, as while several clubs are mentioned, any Rotarian is welcome to put their hand up and join in.
Pounamu Gifted By Zone 8 Women Past, Present and Incoming Governors To RI President Jennifer And RI Director Jessie At  Regional Conference
At the recent Zone 8 Conference Gala Dinner help at Canberra’s Old Parliament House and attended by 500 delegates, Rotary International Zone 8 Director Jessie Harman was presented with a specially designed NZ Pounamu and asked to convey a similar gift to Rotary International President Jennifer Jones.  Representing the women past, present and incoming Governors of the Zone 8 Districts (Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific) were Elaine Mead, Jenn Wong, Jennie Herring, Ingrid Waugh, Vineeta Nand, Marilyn Stevens, Jocelyn Hogg, Liz Courtney and Jan Boustead.

Each pounamu was packaged in a box and kete bag, along with a provenance on each. Jessie was absolutely blown away, touched and delighted. You could say the 'Crowd Went Wild' so New Zealand Pacific women Governors were well represented.

This very special occasion has some very meaningful words and pictures in the full story linked to below

As The Weather Improves Take Advantage Of The Outdoors Thanks To D9920 Rotary Clubs.
The weather is starting to look a bit like summer. What better way to stay fit and vital, what better way to preserve mental health, than to get out and enjoy our incomparable Tamaki Makaurau environment.

Over many years Rotary clubs have created, or inspired, recreational facilities such as walk/cycleways, BBQ areas, and playgrounds that are used by the community.  For instance visit the Pakuranga Rotary Path, a smooth, flat ride around the edge of the water on the East side of the Tāmaki Estuary and Whakaaranga Creek. Enjoy great views up and down the Tāmaki River and to Maungarei (Mt Wellington).

Or try the Rotary Centennial Track on Motutapu Island by Rotary Club of Newmarket. Many other Rotary clubs supported Newmarket, especially St Johns, by creating the track form, a bridge across a stream in Home Bay, and extensive associated plantings of native plants.

Another day manage your fitness program with the Tamaki Drive Distance Markers by the Rotary Club of St Johns. These measure 8 kms between the eastern end of St Heliers Bay to the Ports of Auckland. There is a bronze marker every 1 km and these count up from either end.

All these were created by Rotarians. Business and professional people with vision and dedication. Working hard to create these amazing spaces, using their sweat, qualifications, experience and networks, to create these valuable community assets for the people of Tamaki Makaurau.  Rotary, motivated leaders, having fun and making a real difference in their community.
Interact Forum 2022
Hosted by DG Allan, the Rotary District 9920 held it second Interact Forum on Saturday, 15 Oct 2022 at Dilworth School.

A small turnout but certainly quality Interactors from Auckland Grammar, Rosehill College, Epsom Girls Grammar and Elim Christian School showcased their innovative projects and fundraising ideas helping the local school community and beyond globally.
There are 11 active Interact Clubs in our District and a further 7 in the Pacific region with another 5 Interact Clubs being chartered last week in American Samoa. Congratulations to Frank Barron and his team.

Maddi Faber, Rotary Club of St Johns was on hand to share her journey as a Rotaractor while studying at Victoria University in Wellington before coming back to Auckland and being a member of Rotary Club of St Johns. Chris Osborne, current president of Rotaract Club of Auckland shared his experiences and invited the students to be part of the Rotaract Club main fundraising project “Move for GECAF” on 5 Nov 2022.

Students presented their innovative ways of fundraising, doing good with their charity of choice – from Food Bank Can Collection for City Mission to donating blood for the NZ Blood Foundation and fundraising for the international project with BeyondWater (http://www.beyondwater.global/)

Collaboration between the Interact Clubs of Auckland Grammar, Epsom Girls and St Cuthberts College with fundraising movie nights, trivial quiz and international projects are some of the exciting stuff these young future leaders are involved in.  Rotary Clubs sponsoring the Interact Clubs in the schools, mentoring and connecting with the students would be helpful and appreciated by the students.

The Rotary District Youth chose to present the Young Totara Award to Shreshaa Guhan, from Interact Club of Rosehill College. Shreshaa assisted the RYPEN Leadership Team with organising the slideshows at the recent RYPEN Camp in July 2022.
These young enthusiastic students brought plenty of energy to the event which was held at Dilworth School. The event was organised by District Interact Chair, Ainie Kwok.
Rotarians who attended include Peter Ross, Chair 9920 Youth Services, DG Allan Smith, Hugh Munro, RC Drury.
The Rotary Club Of Auckland East Is back In The News!

Auckland’s Starship Children’s Hospital are planning to purchase a 3D Printed Heart Model, thanks to the efforts of the Rotary Club of Auckland East.

This printed heart unit will enable more effective hands-on training for paediatric cardiologists, and was the result of an online auction run by the Rotary Club of Auckland East.

Professor Tom Gentles and Dr Gemma Penfold welcomed the support for a project, which has been on their radar for over two years.

Professor Gentles and Dr Penfold are pictured, with Auckland East Rotarians Ian Willetts and Graeme Emerson.

Congratulations Auckland East - what a great donation!
Is This An Opportunity For Your Club To Get Involved?
This request for assistance has come from Gillian Jones, Past District Governor (2020-21), Rotary District 9940.  The request is as follows and it is supported by D9920 DG Allan.

This project is about feeding the homeless in downtown Auckland organised by PDG Gillian Jones D9940, daughter Nicky, who lives in Grey Lynn. For several years she has been part of a group of women from Ponsonby and Grey Lynn who support homeless people in Downtown Auckland, by providing evening meals to them on a weekly, (now fortnightly basis).
Global Malaria Congress - May 2023
We have been asked by Bruce Anderson, PDG D9790 and now the new National Manager for Rotarians Against Malaria, to promote the two day Global Malaria Congress which will run immediately prior to the May 2023 RI Convention in Melbourne.

Details of the Congress can be seen link below

FYI - Rotarians Against Malaria, (RAM), is a volunteer-run organization, falling under the auspices of Rotary Australia World Community Services (RAWCS), working to eliminate malaria.

RAM has already made a big impact in the region by supporting a proven Malaria Fighting combination.
