Difference between wild polio virus and vaccine derived polio virus can be summarized as below:

A vaccine-derived polio virus (VDPV) is a strain of the weakened polio virus that was initially included in oral polio vaccine (OPV) and that has changed over time and behaves more like the wild or naturally occurring virus. This means it can be spread more easily to people who are unvaccinated against polio and who come in contact with the stool or respiratory secretions.

For this reason,
• immunity levels against polio viruses should be kept as high as possible in the population by the use of IPV (inactivated polio vaccine)
, and both clinical and environmental surveillance should be maintained at a high level

• The global eradication of polio requires stopping all OPV (oral Polio vaccine) in routine immunization, as soon as possible after the eradication of wild polio virus (WPV) transmission
