Reading Enrichment Programme Literacy Volunteers
The Rotary Reading Enrichment Programme (REP) is a mentoring programme that brings in volunteers from the community, in coordinated teams, to work 1:1 with students. It is within these pairings that the magic happens - intergenerational, mutually-enriching relationships are built between people who otherwise might not have crossed paths.
The goal of REP is to give the students a boost - lift their literacy levels, increase their confidence, and set them on an improved academic path for the rest of their school life. It is a model of purposeful partnership between school and community, where each plays to their strengths.
REP was founded by Penrose Rotary in 1997 at One Tree Hill College, and is now running in twelve North Island schools: One Tree Hill College, Otahuhu College, Wesley College, Pacific Advance Secondary School, Bay of Islands College, Papatoetoe High School, Aorere College, Sir Edmund Hillary Collegiate, Kelston Girls' College, Finlayson Park School, Waiheke Primary School, and Papakura High School.
The programme is led and funded by the Rotary Club of Newmarket, along with a large number of donor organisations. REP is robust and sustainable, because it plays to the strengths of both schools and communities, with a strong team ethos that provides back-up at all times, so no-one is asked to do too much. It represents a wonderful opportunity for clubs to provide community leadership, for highly-effective investment in young people.
